[26] Erika and Kusaihana

Another note on the naming, "Kusaihana" means literally "Stinkyflower." Just saying. :|

Our episode starts with the ggg arriving in Tamamushi City, which is huuuuuuge. It's home to a department store and a game corner! Wow! They're overwhelmed for all of 3 seconds until everyone (except Satoshi) smells something nice and goes to investigate.

They find a perfume shop full of lovely ladies for Takeshi to ogle, and perfumes for Kasumi to try! Satoshi barges in and tells Kasumi they have no time for pointless things like perfume, and the owner comes out and scolds him for saying perfume is useless, saying that it does various things like gives people energy, helps people relax, etc. I forget what all she says, but Satoshi's like "I don't need stuff like that because I already have plenty of energy!" And Kasumi's like "That's ALL u got."

Hah! You better have BURN HEAL!

Satoshi gets kicked out of the perfume shop, and soon gets kicked out of the gym as well, because the leader has decided that only girls are allowed inside.

Meanwhile, the Rockets are breaking into the gym through a window on the side to steal the "legendary perfume" that's locked up inside somewhere. They run into a Pokemon called Kusaihana, however, who just sucks up Dogars's smog like Kirby. Like it's nothing. Rocket Co. is shocked, and then Kusaihana lets out a powerful stench leaving them motionless. They're caught by some of the trainers of the gym and tied up in a tree.

Satoshi runs into the group hanging from the tree, and Musashi comes up with a plot to help the whole group of them get into the gym together.

The Rockets take Satoshi to a boutique and dress him up like a girl, and encourage him to talk girly. They then dress up as his (her?) parents and take him to the gym. Kojiro's mustache is a different size in like every scene and sometimes not there at all. Good job, animation team!

Once they get Satoshi registered, Musashi and Kojiro go off to explore the gym (and look for the legendary perfume again) while Satoshi gets introduced to the other trainers and the leader, whom he recognizes as the owner of the perfume shop earlier.

She's reading a story to the trainers and Kasumi and Takeshi (why Takeshi is allowed in when he's not a girl is beyond me) along with her Pokemon Kusaihana.

Kasumi asks why Kusaihana doesn't release an insufferable smell like she had heard it does. Erika responds that Kusaihana only does that when it senses danger, so as long as it's around kind people, it won't release its horrid odor.

Then she tells the story of how Kusaihana saved her from a wild Betbeter when she got lost as a child.

Long story short, Pikachu blows Satoshi's cover and he challenges Erika to a gym battle.

Erika uses like really exaggerated moves to throw her Monster Balls. I guess I should also mention she uses like extremely proper/polite language, which doesn't exactly fit her personality in the show I feel. She seems a little more spunky, and one of the first things she does is shout at Satoshi and kick him out, so it just feels a little off. Her game/manga appearance is much more cool and collected and polite, so it makes more sense there IMO.

Anyway, she rules it will be a 3-vs-3, and then she sends out Monjara. Satoshi sends out Fushigidane because, of course, it's a grass gym. I don't know exactly how he figures this stuff, but he always makes really weird/dumb decisions. All the other characters in the show seem to do strategic things... but not Satoshi! He's dumb as bricks!

Fushigidana latches onto Monjara, who spins around to wind him in, and then uses spores to paralyze him. Fushigidane knocked out fast! Satoshi considers using Okorizaru, but then remembers how crazy that thing is, and decides to go with Hitokage in the end (yay, a smart choice)!

Erika sends out Utsudon, whose leaf cutter is burned to the ground by Hitokage's fire. Then a quick ram into Utsudon renders it helpless. Hitokage is a strong little bugger.

Lastly, Erika pulls out her ace Kusaihana. Sadly we don't get to see much of it, as all it does is let out a stink which knocks out Hitokage. Pikachu offers to fight it, but the Rockets interrupt the show to set off a bomb in revenge for getting kicked out of the gym and tied up earlier. The bomb blows them out of the building, but at least they managed to nap the legendary perfume before then.

The bomb also sets the gym ablaze, and everyone rescues all the Pokemon and runs out of the gym. They use their Pokemon to help put out the fire (well, except Satoshi, who is cursing the fire for interrupting the battle, until Kasumi forces him to send out Zenigame), but then Erika notices Kusaihana is not with the rest of the Pokemon.

She starts to run into the gym, but Kasumi grabs her to stop her. So Satoshi runs in instead.

He finds Kusaihana and is scared he will smell it and get knocked out by the smell in the burning building. He tries to hold his breath, but when he's about to pick up Kusaihana, he realizes he needs to breathe. But Kusaihana doesn't let out its smell, and Satoshi remembers hearing Erika talk about how it won't do it if it's around kind people.

So he carries Kusaihana out of the burning building, and Erika rewards him with the Rainbow Badge. Yet another badge Satoshi doesn't win in a fair fight. To be honest, Pikachu probably would not have won to Kusaihana, and Satoshi would have lost the battle. At least that's how I personally feel it would have went. Even using game logic, Kusaihana resists electricity, but it's also been training with Erika since she was a child, and Pikachu is not immune to its scent.

We get one final gag of the Rockets opening up the legendary perfume, which is actually just extracted from Kusaihana's scent and terribly stinky! Hahaha, silly Rockets.

Overall, a fun little episode, the crossdressing was cute and funny, and Satoshi constantly trying to hide his face and speak in a feminine manner was amusing. Kojiro wore a false mustache which was nice. And running into a burning building to save a Pokemon is a cool way to win a badge, even if it's not the traditional way.

We're not even at episode 30 and Satoshi already has FIVE badges. There's only eight, so there's only three more to go. But I think we have over 50 episodes to go before the Kanto League arc is over. So the main story is going to slow down drastically most likely? And we'll get more monster-of-the-day episodes, I guess. I guess after three badges we still have the whole final tournament thing, which probably takes like 4 episodes or so? And then maybe like a 'finale' episode tying into the next arc. But yeah, we have a LONG way to go before the Orange Islands arc and we're already at 3 badges o_o We do have some unique areas from the game to visit, like Safari Zone, Cycling Road, Seafoam Islands, Power Plant, and Pokemon Mansion (I don't know if we actually go to all those places with Satoshi or not lol). And I think we'll get a little Team Rocket backstory, too. So there's... stuff in there.

Maybe I should make a "Pokemon Abridged Episode List" that lists episodes with story-relevant stuff. Basically any badges, any new Pokemon, any evolutions... stuff like that. There's probably something like that out there, though.

That’s a nice shot in the first grab.

Satoshi isn’t as bad as I remember as a kid, and in some ways he’s kind of a typical boy, but man. He can be pretty annoying.

Satoshi gets kicked out of the perfume shop, and soon gets kicked out of the gym as well, because the leader has decided that only girls are allowed inside.

That’s… openly sexist, but okay. Aren’t the gyms operated by the league? I feel like there’s a higher up you could petition for this. They can’t just deny the right of progression to a whole group in one location. That’d be jank.

But it does lead to Satoshi being in drag (and working with Team R!), so it’s all worth it in the end.

It's frustrating that Satoshi won’t learn the basic tenants of strategy when his goal is to be a top battler.

But Kusaihana doesn't let out its smell, and Satoshi remembers hearing Erika talk about how it won't do it if it's around kind people.

This is kinda sweet. Though it endears me more to Kusaihana than it does Satoshi.

Yet another badge Satoshi doesn't win in a fair fight.

I appreciate how the series takes on alternative takes to the game mechanics (Ash befriending Pokemon often instead of beating them up to catch them) but it’d be nice if he had to earn at least some of his badges through the proper channels. Oh well.

I hope we’re getting close to the James backstory episode about his cute Growlithe and the dead-ringer for Jessie as a Dominatrix. Love that ep.
