Isky and Setsuna

So, had to go back and do all these random little subquest things because of the death... :) :) :) SO MUCH FUN RUNNING AROUND AND TALKING TO GENERIC NPC AND MAKING ITEM YAY

Anyway, Isky went to the bar because this guy said not to and in RPG language that means "please do it now." Some idiots were like "oooh we kill grey wardens now" but Isky and friends easily beat them up. And they got help from this random church girl who ended up being really cool and is hot.

Isky likes her a lot because she seems very devoted to The Maker and he admires devotion and loyalty and stuff, but he is also fascinated that she has visions even though his other good friend Morrigan thinks it's crazy. So it gives him lots to think about which he enjoys because he loves thinking and that's all he does because he certainly can't fight or convince people of things. So he Sorrow Stared into her soul and they became friends.

Also Isky talked to this guy for 100 hours because of his lovely mustache because he gave useful information.

Then Isky went to church because he feels comfortable in churches because they are places full of rules and stuff, plus he has friends from the Chantry from his days in Circle Land, even though he betrayed his good friend but that's because he had even bigger loyalties but he still respects the Chantry and likes being in the church.

Anyway, he talks to this guy who looks like someone I know but I don't know who it is. Only vaguely he reminds me of the person and I don't know if it's like someone I see on youtube or something or if it's someone I used to know IRL or something I have no idea. But I can vividly remember this person's voice and facial expressions, not exactly their face but kind of ... but I have no idea where this memory is from??????

[OMFG I JUST REALIZED IT IS MY HIGH SCHOOL GOVERNMENT TEACHER LMFAOLSKDGJLKSDJGSDLGKJ WYH DID THIS GUY ]

Then Isky talk to this guy. Honestly his honesty is going to be his downfall...

The guy was really cute and Isky almost didn't accept the reward but accepted it gratefully in the end because it will help him with his Grey Warden duties and help stop the blight and stuff. Isky is humble but also responsible. The reward was offered very honestly so he had no real reason to refuse.

Then while talking to a sister of the church, Isky Sorrow Stared into the distance like always. I wonder if he even listens sometimes, or if he is so overcome with sorrow that staring is all he can do.

Then Isky found this annoying ugly guy. Surprise, it's Alistair's friend. Wow.

Then Isky get a blessing from Church Mom. Also he tithed more money than he received in his reward lol...

Isky tried to convince her to let Big Man go free and come with him, but Isky is terrible at talking to people so she didn't care. But then she talked about it with Leliana and decided to let him free because Leli asked (!!!) (The first time I did this, I did church first then bar, but bar was actually closer to where I saved, so I ended up doing it in the other order this time, and there's little bonus talking with Leli in the church, including this... which made me able to actually save Big Man XD)

So Isky and friends go to unlock Big Man and immediately remove Alistair from the party to make room for him yay!

Then a bunch of refugees heard that we were Grey Wardens and wanted to try to kill us for bounty or revenge or whatever, something not cool. And they surrounded us and Isky had no choice but to fight them :( :( :( They were not that hard to kill, but it was sad to kill innocent people... and now I hate even more that everyone hates Grey Wardens lol... (Also this didn't happen last time before the death so this was new XD)

Isky was very sad but there was nothing to do but move on and loot their bodies for money. The Chanter Board thing asked to clear out some bandits on the other side of town (the ones that came out of nowhere last time and killed me suddenly) and so I went to fight them...

Then I went to fight the bandits again... After defeating one little batch of them, the others just kinda... sat off in the distance and didn't approach? So I just stood around for a long time to let MP replenish (why so slow??)

BUT IN THE END IT DIDN'T MATTER

but at least I had saved just before this so I didn't lose anything.

BTW this is someone I already met but I was hoping he'd be cuter; I'm still waiting for a really attractive character in this game, but since everything is an ugly chibi it's really hard to find one. This guy is ok for what the game gives you but... ehhhhhh...

And you can't see him until you get his stupid profile because eveyrone is just the top of a head so you don't even know what anyone's faces look like except when you get their profiles, and you only get profiles of a very few major NPCs.

Anyway, I'm not going to talk about the story much because so far it's been largely throwaway/generic.

But, I found these fox things which were really hard to beat. I died many times. It's like an optional enemy.

But I found a strategy that worked -- basically I had only Kir attack with Magma, and Endir started the battle with Wall (if you do the 'momentum' version, it affects EVERYONE :D! Really powerful!!). Then the rest of the battle, Endir would do Aura (which also cures status effects if you get momentum) and Setsuna did... Remedy? The thing that cures status effect. Because the foxes can freeze you. It's possible for all three characters to get frozen right in a row because the foxes take their turns immediately after another. But this never happened in all my attempts and they got lots of turns. There were a couple times they'd attack all three characters with the ice beams, but never would all 3 become frozen.

It was a long and difficult battle, but I did it! Fighting them doesn't really seem worth it for the 3000 experience because you can easily go back to the special snowball thing and fight it repeatedly, killing it almost instantly in one hit, and get 1000 experience per battle. Since you can just keep doing it over and over, and it goes pretty fast, you'd get way more than 3000 experience in the time it would have taken you to fight the Silvaras or whatever they are called. Plus you can easily use any party to fight the snowball thing, whereas this is a risk and you can barely scrape through with this party XD I'm sure other combinations work, but... this was the best I could find and the only solution that worked for me (well, I mean, I stopped trying after winning, but I did try many combinations and strategies before this)

I also have a strategy for getting through all the regular areas... it's making the game even easier and more tedious but... there's really no reason not to do it now that I know I can. Basically every battle start with a pre-emptive strike thing (really easy to do), which lets eveyrone start with full ATB and 1 momentum ball thing.

Setsuna goes first and uses Prayer, which restores MP of everyone in a certain area. Usually this can affect everyone, but in some recent battles I can only target one person, which is fine because it's usually Kir and sometimes Green Bear (I can't remember her name honestly LOL)

Anyway, then Kir and Green Bear do their... fire ball combo thing which hits all enemies and usually OHKO's them. So the enemy never gets to attack, and I kill all enemies in the battle instantly. Plus it's pretty good for making money because you get Fire Kill, Time Kill, Link Kill, Momentum and often Over Kill, so you're guarnateed at least 4 drops from each enemy and usually 5. For enemies that I haven't gotten all their drop types yet, I wouldn't even really have to swap party members because the only other element I have is Light, which Setsuna can do, and Exact Kill is just a matter of experimenting. Though I do like to bring in Nidr for that because between him and Kir there's usually an easy way to exact kill, plus he has equipped an accessory that shows enemy HP.

As I was walking there was a tear through the ground texture............ like right in the middle of the screen... and a cutscene thing was playing, too LOL

Now I'm here, whatever this is lol.

Another Isky adventure? *grabs candy*

So he Sorrow Stared into her soul and they became friends.

I laughed for a good minute. Also, wtf is up with Leliana’s eyes in those screen caps? She’s looks positively demonic.

The reward was offered very honestly so he had no real reason to refuse.

Good man, Isky. It’s for the greater good!

Isky Sorrow Stared into the distance like always. I wonder if he even listens sometimes, or if he is so overcome with sorrow that staring is all he can do.

I spit water on my work keyboard. Thanks for that.

So Isky and friends go to unlock Big Man

Yay!

immediately remove Alistair from the party to make room for him yay!

Aww.

but it was sad to kill innocent people

Uh, Isky? Those men tried to murder you, and your friends. They’re not exactly innocent civilians.

but at least I had saved just before this so I didn't lose anything.

Isky’s learned the hard way. I did too. I understand your pain, Isky.

I had to skip past the I Am Setsuna part, because I'd like to play it sometime. I'll prob go back and read your commentary (and comment!) in like six years when I finally get around to playing it lol

I'm happy you're enjoying Isky hahaha.

THE EYES IN THIS GAME ARE CREEPY OMG. Like, just in general creepy but then yeah you get some moments when it's like ... downright scary XD

Hahaha I kinda don't like Alistair very much. He's really annoying. People who use humor to cover their feelings or whatever are super annoying to me (well, depending on the type of humor). I mean, I can appreciate what they're doing, and I understand... but... they just... make me so uncomfortable and irritated and Alistair is like nonstop. I have theories of why it bothers me so much (like personal history stuff) but I don't want to go into it XD

Well, Isky at least is understanding that these people are on hard times + have been manipulated into blaming Grey Wardens for their problems. He realized he had to fight them, but he thinks the circumstances are still sad. He doesn't agree with what they did but he feels bad that they had to live a life that led to that. He spends a lot of time thinking (and thus sorrowfully staring into space) XDD

(BTW another thing that really bothers me about the choices in this game that I forgot to mention in the Isky Adventures I think is that it's almost never presented as an option to respect the church and its followers. Even with Leliana, you would have like 4 different ways to mock her or insult her, and one way to just kind of... ignore what she was saying as if she were insane...)

If you want a spoiler-free first impression of Setsuna (just stop reading here if you don't want to hear it): As far as I've gotten (10 hours in now), it is very generic and lazy. The story is completely throwaway textbook cliches one after another. The main storyline is pretty much a direct (and more generic somehow) ripoff of another game you've played. Assets are reused way too much and it makes everything look the same. Graphics are super gorgeous at some points and then really boring and ugly at others. As for the gameplay, there's a lot of really interesting mechanics (though none of them original, but put together really well) that would be really fun... if the battles weren't so mind-numbingly easy that you didn't even need to use them. You can easily get by just using the attack command for the entire game for as far as I've played. The only reason I even use the combos and stuff is because it makes it go faster. You can kill enemies in different ways to get different drops (which is critical to getting new abilities and stuff) but this is just an exercise in tedium than anything.

It's been... largely disappointing... BUT!!!! It feels like any moment now it's going to pick up. I don't know what it is, but something about the game tells me that I just "haven't gotten there yet" and eventually it's going to become great.

I am enjoying Isky! I love playthrough recaps like this. They make me happy.

Hahaha I kinda don't like Alistair very much

Sadness hahah. I actually downloaded a PC mod so I could romance him as a dude in my first PT. I can relate to hiding the things that bother you behind self-deprecating humor. I am a master. Even so, I think he's physically attractive, and I really like his voice work. His...I dunno...buffy-isms can be really funny ("You sneaky...sneaky witch-thief!"), and his loyalty to the PC is very sweet. His romantic path is great, but even being a platonic dude friend is cute. Some of his party banters with a romanced Morrigan are especially great (he's totes jelly the PC is spending so much time in Morrigan's tent at night, instead of with him), and his interactions with some of the later party members is cool.

I dunno, hopefully he'll grow on you after Redcliffe. If he doesn't, at least you still have the amazing Morrigan for Isky to go on adventures with :D

I think is that it's almost never presented as an option to respect the church and its followers.

Yeah, it's fairly infrequent. Inquisition fixes that by giving you the option to pretty much have your Inquisitor be very religious. Possibly dangerously so.

Looking at this entry again I just realized there is like NO TRANSITION into the I Am Setsuna stuff oops XD

Anyway again so glad you're enjoying Isky XD I like reading people's playthrough stuff too XD

Alistair just happens to rub me all the wrong ways, I guess, and I don't really find him attractive so so far he's my least fav. I actually kinda liked him at first, but he quickly got on my nerves. But yeah my opinions on characters tend to continue to change as I experience them so who knows how I'll feel later XD I'd like to eventually play through and romance everyone at least once, and do all the origin stories or whatever, so... I'll probably end up finding an appreciation for him somehow because anymore I tend to just like everyone eventually.

Yeah, now and then there's an option that sounds nice (re: church stuff) but then I can tell from the reaction of the person I'm talking to that the option was intended to be sarcastic. I just want to respect the people ?? lolol.

But the game is like

"Hello, I am going to pray now."
> Wow what a dumbass were you dropped as a kid you stupid fucking idiot?!??!
> Oh so you're one of those loonies lololol guys look at this loser
> Don't you realize it's pointless and fake ??????
> Fuck the Maker he hates everyone including you

And I'm just like........... which.........do..... I pick.............
