[10] Fushigidane of the Hidden Village

This episode starts out with Kasumi trying to catch Nazonokusa because it's by the water (????) even though Satoshi saw it first, and then a Fushigidane comes out to protect it, and Satoshi tries to catch that, but fails.

In fact, the Fushigidane is shown using some kind of breath attack (?????????????????) to blow back Butterfree's sleep spores onto itself, making it fall asleep (lol). Very strange way to start the episode. Then for some reason?? we are crossing a bridge and it breaks, dropping Takeshi into the river. Satoshi somehow climbs the ENTIRE BRIDGE with Kasumi holding onto his leg lol.

After some more gags of Kasumi falling in a hole (no indication how she got out) and Satoshi and Kasumi getting caught in a net, we meet Midori, today's one-off character, who runs the Pokemon sanctuary here, helping take care of the weakened Pokemon of the forest who aren't able to take care of themselves. Apparently she saved Takeshi from the river, who then saved Kasumi and Satoshi from the net.
Takeshi seems to have a crush on her, but when Kasumi tries to say anything about it, he gets embarrassed and tries to silence her. This is pretty different from the unabashed way he just hits on ladies later in the series, usually needing other characters to pull him away from being a complete perv. I guess that's more comical, but this more shy side of Takeshi is a lot more interesting to me.
This episode also includes a LOT of talking about the Pokemon sanctuary, and watching the Pokemon in their habitat. Then Kasumi starts to apologize to Nazonokusa for trying to catch it, and gets so worked up she cries over it (lol?)

Then Rocket Co. gets caught in a net too, and then ... somehow just has a giant balloon fortress???? Like it doesn't explain how they got out of the net much less how they got this giant fortress in no time at all (though the signs on it indicate they got it at some kind of bargain sale or something but who sells this kind of stuff in a forest?!)
This episode is really silly.

There's a part where the Rockets are trying to suck up all the Pokemon with a giant hose attached to their balloon thing, and Satoshi helps prop up Fushigidane who is holding Nazonokusa. But there's like several frames of animation where his hand is NOT on Fushigidane's bulb where there's like... a 'hole' where his hand is supposed to go lol. Like, it's VERY obvious, and I even remember this from the English version.
Anyway, after Satoshi helps save the Pokemon, Fushigidane stops being protective, and Midori suggests Satoshi take Fushigidane with him. Fushigidane wants to fight (and somehow Midori is able to interpret this from like a little wiggle, when Pikachu has to go through elaborate charades to get his point across to the others), and they have a short little fight with Pikachu, probably to kill some more screen time... in the end Pikachu wins and Satoshi throws a Monster Ball at Fushigidane to catch it.
To be honest this was a fairly poor episode IMO. The writing seems random and like no one really thought it through, like they just had to make up an episode in 2 hours and crammed this together. But it's the episode where Satoshi gets the iconic Pokemon Fushigidane, so honestly it deserved to be much better. Which only makes it all the more disappointing. IIRC the Hitokage episode is MUCH better than this. The Zenigame episode is kind of comical, but ... probably better than this, too lol. I think those two are coming up soon, so we'll see.
I wasn't this critical of the show when I was a young teen, so I don't think I noticed just how bad this episode really was. But watching it now... oof. I was just constantly going "wtf" through the whole episode and not really enjoying myself with the odd pacing and completely random acts.
