So we left last episode with a cliffhanger -- Satoshi was throwing a Monster Ball at Caterpie! Will he catch it?!

Well, the answer is yes! Satoshi gets his first Pokemon :D And of course it's one of my all-time favs. When I was coming up with my YouTube moniker, I originally tried "Caterpie" but it was taken, so I tried "Metapod" instead. That wasn't taken, so I got the original URL for 'metapod.' This was back when you had to have unique usernames on YouTube lol.

I love the little part where Caterpie and Pikachu have a nighttime chat/play session. It's so cute, and really brings the Pokemon to life, I feel.

Half the episode is just Kasumi hating on Caterpie and Caterpie getting sad lol. For some reason I think this little scene where Caterpie crawls away to the ball is so cute (but sad). Satoshi inching along like a caterpillar in his sleeping bag is so funny.

Caterpie isn't the only Pokemon that Satoshi catches in this episode, actually. He actually gets Pigeon as well. Before trying to capture it, though, we're introduced to it by showing it eating some kind of little worm. Does that mean there are non-Pokemon bugs in the Pokemon world? Kasumi also says stuff like "It doesn't matter if it's a Pokemon, a bug is a bug!" and stuff like that. So maybe there are regular bugs and Pokemon bugs...? Does that mean there are other non-Pokemon animals, too?

If it is a Pokemon, that means we get evidence of Pokemon feeding off other Pokemon in the anime. If you read my Pokemon Yellow playthrough (another thing I never finished) that Pokemon are commonly said to prey on each other in the games. But I think they dialed that back a lot for the anime, never showing or mentioning it explicitly. Except in this case, whether it's a Pokemon or not, we're shown that Pokemon do indeed feed on living creatures.

In the end, Caterpie beats up Rocket Co. and evolves into Transel. It's funny because even though Rocket Co. uses two Pokemon at once, Satoshi insists on only using one at a time as per Pokemon League rules, even though Kasumi even says he doesn't need to worry about that at the time.

Somehow Pigeon was unable to do much, but little hurt Caterpie was able to take down Arbo, Dogars, AND Nyarth by shooting string alone.

A shame that Kasumi was finally going to pet Caterpie when it decided to evolve.

Satoshi puts Transel in his backpack for the end of the episode and carries him that way. I think after this, though, Transel is always shown in the Monster Ball...? Also, it's a bit strange that Satoshi wants Pikachu and Transel out of the ball but he never once thinks about letting Pigeon fly around with them lol.

ETA: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that Kasumi slaps Satoshi AGAIN in this episode. That's 3 times she's hit him now XD

It's crazy how memorable this episode, and Caterpie, are only for it to evolve into Metapod at the end of the episode.

Pigeon. What a lame name for such a neat looking birdo.
