I was trying to come up with a proper translation for this but I don't know if suichuuka are called anything in English??? They're like these dry artificial flowers that you put in water and then they bloom, and you contain them in little snowglobe-esque 'vases' to show them off, usually with some kind of colored glass or colored water. I don't know of a way to shorten that in English. I thought of "Water Blossoms" but that sounds kinda of weird (suichuuka literally means underwater flower). Serebii lists the episode as "Water flowers of Cerulean Gym" which is... lol because they don't capitalize Flowers in the title and the title definitely says Hanada City, not Hanada Gym. So uh IDK. Serebii also consistently mispells Samurai.

Anyway, I just left it as Suichuuka. I haven't actually watched the episode yet, just stopped to get this post ready (I don't actually write while watching, I just take screenshots while watching when I think of something I want to talk about and then try to remember everything I want to say by the screenshot gallery lol 9_9

Also, I found a better way to take screenshots that will reduce the filesize by about 60% so that's great. Basically I'm just going to use VLC's built-in screenshot feature (didn't realize it was a thing until I decided to go look for it just now) instead of Windows's.

ANYWAY GONNA GO WATCH.

OK Den talked to me after I watched this and then I made some tea so I don't remember everything I wanted to say XD There's not a ton of screenshots of this one. Half the episode was just the battle with Kasumi so there's not a TON to say that's unique.

We learn that the police officer's name is Junsa. She tries to arrest Satoshi and Takeshi at first, but they show the zukan and a Gray Badge and she's just like "Oh you're a trainer and a gym leader? You can't possibly be the criminals!" lol so I guess being a registered trainer with a zukan is like a get-out-of-all-trouble-free card XD

Takeshi asks Junsa out for tea, but she just says she's too busy with the case. Satoshi makes a little ^^; face. They REALLY play up the Takeshi hitting on girls/getting rejected thing later in the series. But here it was just a minor little thing.

Satoshi goes to Hanada Gym only to find it's more about synchronized swimming than it is about Pokemon battles. Then he finds an underground aquarium thing, and we see normal real-world fish instead of Pokemon...? Again, like the worm from before, it could be that these are just species of Pokemon unknown to the game, but they definitely look like "regular fish" to me. So in the anime it's possible that some types of 'normal' animals exist alongside Pokemon. Though we only ever see a few.

It's mostly just an oversight or unfinished decision by the authors, most likely, as they move away from this as the series goes on. I don't know if it's every explicitly retconned but we can assume that there are NOT non-Pokemon animals from later episodes.

The word "suichuuka" never comes up in the episode BTW. Just in the title.

I kinda remember the sisters not wanting to battle because they didn't like battling and found it boring in the English version...? In this version, they more say they are tired from battling and all their Pokemon are tired after facing three other trainers from Masara Town.

Seel's Japanese name is "Pawou" which sounds like "Pow-wow". I actually thought they had nicknamed their Pokemon "Bow-Wow" at first and was surprised they had a Pokemon with a nickname. But then I realized that's just its actual name and they were saying "Pawou."

I think it's funny how they try to give Satoshi the badge at first without battling and he doesn't really want it because he didn't earn it (well, he's hesitant; he almost takes it before Kasumi jumps in) but then when they say it's thanks to Pikachu that the gym was saved, he's more than happy to take it, even though he didn't win the battle with Kasumi.

So he TECHNICALLY did win his battle with Takeshi, and then ALMOST won his battle with Kasumi. The sisters admit that if he had used Pikachu in the battle, he would have won. So he... kinda earned two badges hahaha.

I like how they have unique stadiums for fighting in the gyms. It's not really something that could be accomplished in the games easily, but it's pretty cool. Takeshi had a gym with rocks everywhere, and Kasumi's battle takes place on floating platforms over a giant pool.

Oh and Pigeon actually had a successful battle for once! Suprisingly, it beat Starmie, who is NOT a pushover by any means in the game, and probably the strongest of all of Kasumi's Pokemon that have been shown in the show so far.

Kasumi made a pun that the beauty (bijyo) is all wet (bisyo-bisyo) and I thouhgt that was kinda funny. Then one of the sisters told her that was supposed to be her line. There were so many points where they had to reiterate that Kasumi was NOT beautiful lol.

She's very cool-looking in the games though! She's supposed to be tomboyish so she's not going to have the same style as the sisters, but I love her look in gen 2 when she's a little older and keeps her hair down. I mean I like her look in the show, too; she looks cooler than the sisters at least. But of like all of Satoshi's girl companions she's probably my least favorite (don't hit me).

Not a lot of screenshots, sorry XD

Overall, an OK episode. I think Rocket Co.'s plan was really stupid, and there was all this "danger" of the Pokemon being sucked up, but Pawou got sucked up and it was perfectly fine, so it seems like nothing even happened if you got sucked up? Overall just kinda dumb plot device to stir in some action. I did like the fight with Kasumi though; it was actually probably better than the fight with Takeshi now that I think about it.

Seeing real fish kinda got me like "wuhhh"

Kasumi's design is iconic. Every kid I knew in elementary was obsessed with her. In second grade the first ever pornography I saw was a picture of Misty some other kid was printed out and brought to school. What's crazy is the picture is (unfortunately) seared into my brain. Misty with her shorts off, stuffing a terrified looking Pikachu inside of her. The kid passed the picture around the whole class until the teacher noticed hah. But now, every time I see Misty/Kasumi, a small part of me thinks back to that picture and feels sad.

You're telling me lol. I'm haunted by the image. Pikachu has never looked so scared. He just wants to go home!
