So, I'm not going to actually DO a Crystal Revenge run right now (I still want to finish the Yellow Dex Run) but I need something to do for a little bit before I watch the next episode partly to avoid burnout but mostly to wait for Dens to go to sleep so I don't get interrupted.
So I just wanted to look at the mons that would be potential candidates for the 'perfect team' of Pokemon Crystal.
The biggest problem with this, though, is that... it almost ends up being the same team as before. So I'll make a rule that we can only use Pokemon new to Generation 2!
Again, the "strat" for single player is outspeed and sweep. Boring as that is, that's how the single player game works :P So we are going to look at all the new Pokemon who have speed of 100 or higher. There's... not a lot. We have the following:
Aaaaaand that's it. Only 6. So if we had to make a team of 100+ Speed Pokemon, we'd be stuck with those six. Typing-wize it's not... terribly-balanced, actually. But we need to make sure we cover all the HMs as well... I don't think we can do that with that group? We don't even have a water-type Pokemon, which we'll need for the THREE Water HMs we have in this game. Whoo.
Let's look at the fastest gen 2 Pokemon that can learn each TM instead, this time noting everyone with speed 80 or above. 80 isn't really great, but we have to have some leeway here... We're also going to not include legendary Pokemon, like before.
Cut
Fly
Surf
Strength
Flash
Whirlpool
Waterfall
Aaaaand, that's that. Kind of a big oof in many of the departments.
Let's cut out all the Pokemon who have too weak of attacks (lower than 80 in both Attack and Special Attack) and Pokemon that can't be caught until the second half of the game...
Cut
Fly
Surf
Strength
Flash
Whirlpool
Waterfall
... Not a lot of options.
Looks like we'll be forced to use Kingdra. Now, we could get all three Water-type HMs on Kingdra but there's a few problems -- firstly, we're not even going to be able to get Kingdra until way late in the game after we can already Surf, so we're going to need something to use Surf before then. Secondly, that would leave Kingdra with only with one available move slot. And it would be nice to get both Blizzard and Dragon Breath on Kingdra... so we might want to go with Surf on someone else, and let Kingdra's offensive Water type move be Waterfall instead.
So who will we use to Surf? Sneasel is acquired pretty late-game, and doesn't really have a good movepool at all -- its power lies in its Attack, but its types are Dark and Ice which are Special type.
So Miltank seems like the best choice. Miltank can also learn Strength with STAB, and then we'll get access to two more moves. Earthquake is the obvious one. It doesn't have the best accuracy, but we can also go with Iron Tail, which has 100 Power. Miltank's bulk can help it in the case that it misses.
So that's Surf, Waterfall, Whirlpool, and Strength out of the way. We need Cut, Fly, and Flash still.
For Fly and Flash, we could get both on Xatu. If we fill up our HM Party, we could choose another Pokemon free from the burden of HMs. Though, Crobat will be easier to get earlier in the game. Then we'd still have to choose between Xatu and Stantler for Flash, and Stantler has a horrendous movepool. So Xatu seems to be the way to go.
Lastly, we just have Cut. Typhlosion seems like a good choice since we can get it from the very beginning, and we're going to need a starter anyway. If we must, we can always swap out to another Pokemon later, though, since the only useful thing it's going to be able to do is a single Fire move.
So we have Kingdra, Miltank, Xatu, and Typhlosion. Now, in Pokemon Red Revenge, we used only 5 Pokemon because of the EXP distribution being smaller, allowing us to go through the game even faster. But in this one, it seems like our movepool is going to need bigger priority, as we don't have a lot of good moves right now. We might need to fill up two other slots based on what moves we need.
So far we have this party:
Kingdra: Waterfall, Whirlpool, Dragon Breath, Blizzard (or Icy Wind?)
Miltank: Surf, Strength, Earthquake, Iron Tail
Xatu: Flash, Fly, Psychic, Giga Drain
Typhlosion: Cut, Flamethrower
We're not going to get far with this... and it's also scary because a lot of these moves are not even available until late-game. So we're going to be relying on much weaker moves...
We need to look at solid long-term Pokemon we can get early in the game that have a variety of moves. We might even have to sacrifice a little bit of Speed or Attack/SpAttack stats for variety of moves or moves with higher Power...
Cyndaquil/Quilava should get us easily past the first two gyms. And if that's all we're really training, we shouldn't have TOO hard of a time VS our first really big roadblock, Miltank, who is weaker in Sp Def than Def.
Our next big hurdle is the Fog Badge, where we have to fight four Ghost/Poison Pokemon in a row. We could have Xatu by now, but it doesn't learn Psychic (or anything else useful) until level 65. I guess if all we're training up until this point is Typhlosion, it should be enough to get us through that...
Next up will be the battle with Chuck. He only has two Pokemon, but they should prove formidable, especially Poliwrath which would be scary for Typhlosion. Maybe if we had trained Crobat by this point, we could have a strong enough Flying type move to sweep him...
Jasmine can also be knocked down with just Typhlosion.
Pryce is our next big hurdle. Seel should fall to a Wing Attack, but Dewgong will be able to knock out Crobat easily if it doesn't KO it in one hit... It would help to have access to a good Fighting, Electric, or Grass move at this point. Grass is probably not helpful since most Grass moves are unique to Grass Pokemon, and they'll be knocked out by the Ice as well.
I can't really find anything good, though, so it looks like we're going to have to hope Crobat can deal enough damage that Typhlosion can take it out on the next turn, then Typhlosion shouldn't have too hard of a time with Piloswine.
By that time, we'll finally have access to Kingdra, and we'll have access to the TM for Icy Wind... but HER Kingdra will be quite the problem. I think we'll just have to hope our three can take it out before they die lol.
It would be interesting to try breeding for a Kingdra that can use Aurora Beam, but that would take away from the whole 'blast through the game as fast as possible' thing. But it would be neat to utilize the new features of this generation's game. But then we'd be stuck with a level 5 Horsea and nothing to do but grind out its levels. I guess we'll just have to go with Icy Wind.
Then we have the Elite 4. By now we should have access to a lot more Pokemon and moves...
So our main team at this point is Typhlosion, Crobat, and Kingdra. We could also have Milktank and Xatu, but they're not going to have that much offensive power, as Miltank's moves come later in the game and Xatu needs to reach level 65 to have access to Psychic.
So we have room for one more Pokemon... we need to make that one count, and see if we can take on the Elite 4.
ELITE FOUR WILL
Kingdra should be able to take care of the Xatus and Exeggutor. Jynx is really weak in Defense, so a Bite from Crobat should do it. Slowbro doesn't have any Water moves, so we could take it out with Typhlosion's Thunder Punch, which it'll now have access to.
ELITE FOUR KOGA
The three bugs will fall to Typhlosion easily. Muk's Defense isn't the greatest, so we could maybe Wing Attack it with Crobat and hope it falls in a couple hits. Crobat will be a little scary since it's VERY fast, and even we might not outspeed it with Kingdra, our best chance of defeating it. But we shouldn't get KO'd as his Crobat isn't that great.
ELITE FOUR BRUNO
Wing Attack everything and Waterfall on Onix.
ELITE FOUR KAREN
She has a wide variety of Pokemon, but we should be able to cater to half of their weaknesses. Vileplume is weak to Fire, Murkrow to Electric, and Houndoom to Water. That leaves Gengar and Umbreon. We can take out Umbreon with Crobat, since all it really does is status moves. For Gengar... I guess we'll just have to Bite it and hope it dies.
CHAMPION LANCE
We should be able to Thunder Punch Gyarados, and Ice everything else but the Charizard who will fall to Waterfall.
Oh we should also have access to Earthquake at this point, but Miltank probably won't be very leveled up... we'll have to start working on her next.
Next we'll travel to Kanto.
VS Surge we'll just use Earthquake and it will be no problem.
VS Sabrina we might be able to get by with Bite... but we might also be able to get Murkrow at this point so that might be a good addition to the team...?
VS Erika will be easy with Typhlosion
VS Janine... hopefully we'll have Psychic by this point. If not, the only thing we have to worry about is Weezing and they are low level with low Sp Def, so Typhlosion will probably be able to OHKO them anyway.
VS Misty... this is going to be a tough one, since Typhlosion's Thunder Punch will have to OHKO them if we're not to be taken out by Water type moves. Starmie could be taken out by Murkrow if we picked it up, but we'd still have to worry about Lapras. I guess this would just be where Typhlosion takes one for the team and the rest clean up.
VS Brock is easy for Kingdra, as is VS Blaine
VS Blue. An interesting fight.
Pidgeot - Taken out by Thunder Punch
Alakazam - Another target for Murkrow?
Rhydon - Waterfall
Gyarados - Thunder Punch
Exeggutor - Flamethrower
Arcanine - Waterfall
Looks like he won't be too hard.
Then finally we have the showdown with Red.
Pikachu - Earthquake
Espeon - Another target for Murkrow?!
Snorlax - Oof, this is going to be a toughie...
Venusaur - Flamethrower
Charizard - Waterfall
Blastoise - Thunder Punch
Snorlax, huh? Its moveset is Amnesia, Snore, Rest, and Body Slam. Looks like we'll want to use Physical attacks, but our only Physical Attackers are Miltank and Crobat. Miltank will be able to tank the hits better from Body Slam and Snore, so we'll just have to hope we can Strength it to faint before it's able to do much damage. It shouldn't be TERRIBLY difficult. Our biggest problem will be that we're not going to be getting much EXP in Kanto and Red's Pokemon are all very high levels.
So here's our final team:
TYPHLOSION: Cut, Strength, Flamethrower, Thunder Punch
CROBAT: Fly, Wing Attack, Bite, Steel Wing
XATU: Fly, Flash, Psychic, Giga Drain
MILTANK: Surf, Strength, Earthquake, Iron Tail
KINGDRA: Waterfall, Whirlpool, DragonBreath, Icy Wind (Aurora Beam...?)
MURKROW: Faint Attack, Shadow Ball, Steel Wing, ... uh, IDK, Hidden Power? lol.
And Typhlosion and Crobat will basically be carrying for most of the main game, then post game we'll power up the rest of them.
Aaaand I essentially wasted 4 hours on this and didn't get any watch time in for Pokemon anime :,)
So I just wanted to look at the mons that would be potential candidates for the 'perfect team' of Pokemon Crystal.

- Crobat (130 -- tied with Mewtwo! Still doesn't beat the 140 of Electrode)
- Sneasel (115 -- would be cool to add one of each of the new types in, too)
- Jumpluff (110 -- though its attacks are not high, it's more of a 'utility' mon)

- Typloshion (100 -- maybe the 'Charizard' of this run?)
- Miltank (100 -- had no idea this thing was this fast)
Aaaaaand that's it. Only 6. So if we had to make a team of 100+ Speed Pokemon, we'd be stuck with those six. Typing-wize it's not... terribly-balanced, actually.
