Sep. 20th, 2016 11:59 pmMajor spoilers for Ys: The Oath in Felghana...

So, I finally beat the stupid ice dragon thing. I pretty much had to find a way to cheese it... I think if I had really sat there and practiced it for days on end I could have beaten it the way it was intended, but instead I had to do it a weird way. Basically, I locked it into a certain pattern took its HP out kinda fast with it... I don't really know how to explain it and it was still mostly up to luck. If it wasn't for the randomness of the ice falling on you and stuff, I would say it was a well-designed boss... but when it does the wind attack thing, icicles can randomly appear like ON your head and hurt you, and getting hurt can sometimes lead to getting hurt again... when it's 3 or 4 hits to game over, this is pretty awful. You can die from a single wind attack. Plus the camera and Adol's movements get super wonky during this part. And the things you're supposed to be dodging are really hard to see because of the 'wind effect' being too similar in color to the ice shard things...
ANYWAY, I beat it and then a BUNCH of story happened.

Basically, all the statues being in one place did... something. They all like lit up and the whole cave rumbled. But then Adol got caved in. But it was OK because Dogi finally got to crush a wall in this game XD

He was pretty happy about it. Somehow I really love Dogi XD

Who the heck talks like this, Chester???
Anyway, Chester reveals that he pretends to be working for McGuire since McGuire is looking for the statues, but just sends the knights, so Chester worked to become top knight (IDK how he got there in less than 6 months but whatever) so he could be the one finding the statues, with the help of McGuire's control and army.
But his secret plan was to get the statues for himself so he could use them to exact his revenge on McGuire. Apparently, Chester and Elena are the only remaining surviviors of the Genos Island tragedy, as well as descendants of Genos. I guess everyone on Genos Island was descendants of Genos. But instead of a plague destroying the island like most people believe it was actually McGuire who killed everyone and tried to cover it up with the plague story. He summoned some kind of undead army to kill everyone, but Chester and Elena escaped, and ended up in the care of Mayor Edgar.
Now Chester wants to kill not only McGuire, but everyone in Valestein Castle (which would mean even Bishop Nikolas and stuff...!!) because he's mad with revenge lol. This is probably the worst story of all the Ys games, even the first two...

Though, I was pretty shocked when this happened! Chester stabbed Dogi, and threatened to finish him off if Adol didn't hand over the statues. Adol and Dogi arepassionate lovers besties so Adol gave up the statues and Chester left so Adol could tend to Dogi.
I should mention this is a particularly big deal because Chester and Dogi are close childhood friends. It was actually because Dogi realized there was no way Chester would help McGuire (Dogi didn't know of Chester's past, though, but just knows Chester well) that Chester ended up confessing his plan.

Adol took Dogi to Berhardt's mountain shack thing to help him heal, and Berhardt told the rest of the story. Berhardt used to be a knight for McGuire, too (how the hell old is McGuire??!?!) and was stationed on Genos island during the massacre. His job, along with others stationed around the outsides of the island, was to kill off any survivors who managed to get far enough to try to escape.
But when survivors appeared in front of Berhardt, it was just two very young children... he didn't have the heart to kill them, so he instead hid them and helped them escape to Felghana, where he entrusted them to Mayor Edgar. He then hid away in a mountain shack, too ashamed to return to live with people since he helped commit genocide, even if he did save two kids.

Later he decided to become a combat master to Chester (and Dogi). Elena had completely repressed her memories, but Chester had kept faint ones or something, until one day all the memories came back, and he became overwhelmed by them, seeking Berhardt for help. I don't really remember what happened after that or what exactly caused Chester to go vengeance-crazy, though.
Berhardt also studied the legends of Genos and Galbalan and stuff to learn more about... things, and he said that if Chester awakens Galbalan's power, he'll destroy not only the castle but all of Felgana. So we gotta stop him. Looks like Chester is our new bad guy...? But... McGuire is still bad. But he's a background badguy now, I guess. I guess we'll probably see some kind of McGuire/Chester moment come to a head before the end.

Going back into town, it seemed there was some kind of battle... some of McGuire's knights had attacked the town for no reason (maybe looking for Adol and the statues?). There were still a few left and Adol saved Elena and Anya from the few soldiers. The church people came and mentioned that the soldiers looked as if they were possessed dolls or something, rather than actual humans, and never spoke at all. So maybe they are like the undead army McGuire had used to attack Genos Island???
Anyway, everyone met up at Edgar's place to discuss it further when shockingly enough for like the 10th time in the story, Elena ran off somewhere and left town on her own, unguarded. She had learned that Chester had attacked Dogi, so Edgar suggests she probably went to the castle to try to find Chester. So now it's Adol's job to go to the castle and try to find Elena...
And that's about where I stopped. One boss fight and tons of story stuff and that's all I did for today :P
