Sep. 27th, 2016 10:59 amWoooOoOoOoooo
I'm feelin' the bads.
I don't really wanna go into it.
I think I might go outside in the mornings and walk around?? Since ilke... the sun comes in through the window in the mornings (which I like waking up to) so I can't really use the computer. I maen, obviously I can, but there's a lot of glare and the sun is like in my eyes and stuff so it's just squinting and leaning and etc.
I don't want to leave my room though.
Like anxiety thing lol.
It's been a full week since I started medication woooo. I actually don't??? have a headache today??? As I say that my head hurts but I think it's because I'm thinking about it (???)
Anyway, I'm having a hard time writing this because I'm still really distracted, like having trouble concentrating... But I was kinda easily distracted like this before the medication, it's just... more noticeable? Or maybe I'm just noticing it more now or something.
Anyway, a thing I want to get off my chest since no one reads this anyway:
Like, there is this prevalent idea in our culture that it's ~good~ to respect and tolerate others' political views in the same way people respect and tolerate others' religion and normal opinions or whatever but like
No????
Like, political views are not the same as opinions like if pineapple is good on pizza (it is good on pizza). Like, political views literally affect other people? And affect how you value and treat other people? Political views are literally views about how you think other people should be treated/cared for, and those views can be harmful, hateful, destructive, etc.?? Like if your views literally are devaluing people and working to harm people ... that is not something that deserves to be respected or tolerated?? Why do we feel like it should be?
Like if I don't want to be your friend because your views treat me as lesser than other human beings, or even treat other people that aren't me as lesser beings, or your views are that I'm not valuable enough to warrant the same protections or benefits as other people like... if your views literally include harming me in any way, even passive like... I don't want to be your friend? Because friends to not believe friends are lesser beings????? Friends do not believe friends deserve suffering??? I should not have to worry about being viewed as ~intolerant~ over not wanting to be friends with someone who wishes harm to me or views me as some kind of lower 'rank' or lesser being??? That person is the one who is intolerant????
Political views are not opinions that you are supposed to keep protected from criticism and opposition. Political views, by their very nature, are meant to be constantly challenged and questioned and refined and changed. If you're not doing that, then what you have isn't a political view, it is a bias, and it's probably a bigotry. Political views are about working together to change and understand better others, to work together to create better and new ideas.
But we have this weird culture where we think you're supposed to "pick" some kind of "side" and then fervently defend it, and anyone who looks down on this view is being intolerant or disrespectful or something and like?????????????? No that's not how it works??????????????????????? But like that's how like a large majority of our culture views politics and that's very terrifying.
But yeah it just really bothers me when people act like it's important to respect and tolerate others' political views like... OK in some meanings yes this is true, like... you should value all new voices and always listen to other views and examine them constructively, but that doesn't mean you should tolerate or even respect "views" that harm or devalue others???
But a big problem is that pretty much EVERYONE has political "views" that devalue or harm others and since our culture promotes "choosing" and "defending" views rather than challenging and refining political thought, that means pretty much everyone has political views that are not worthy of respect or tolerance lolol.
But also by its nature, politics on a grand scale pretty much will always devalue someone. Unless we could press a "utopia now" button, even ideas like democracy and capitalism are harmful. So what do you even do??
But anyway my point is just that I don't have a lot of tolerance for people's political "views" most of the time and I honestly do not think that is a bad thing, and I wish more people were intolerant of harmful "views."
But the problem is it's not some kind of black-and-white rule where you can just go "OK, it's fine to be intolerant now" and then just start ignoring views and ideas because you personally don't like them lol. Just the point is that there is nothing inherent about political views in general that demand respect or tolerance and we should not view them that way. Rather, you should respect and accept new ideas and thoughts and voices, and examine them carefully, but you should be open to reject and not tolerate "views" that harm and devalue people like... IDK this is just common sense to me but??? I feel like I know too many people who make it a point to ~respect everyone's political views~ but like... no, sorry, if that view does not value everyone, even indirectly, I'm not going to respect it, and you should not either???
OK I realize I just repeated a lot.

Date: 2016-09-28 04:19 am (UTC)*I think for me everything political (economy/education/foreign affairs etc) is up for debate EXCEPT we do need to treat human beings like human beings no matter sexual orientation/race/religion etc. No one should be treated like less for being different.
I'm not a racial minority, but I am female and I have lived with a disability and been very poor the majority of my life. Those views have shaped my political ideologies. I do not know much beyond those experiences, so of course other people may have a perspective I haven't considered... and that is the important aspect of debate we're missing out on so much these days, imo.
