Sooo I'm really deep into the rasslin thing. I've moved beyond just watching WWE and watch a bunch of other stuff now. I have a weekly schedule so I have at least two shows to watch every weekday LOL.
Here's my impressions (along with my crushes from them) of the promotions I've been watching, in order from my favorite to least favorite:
AEW is my favorite promotion right now. Not only does it have Peter Avalon but the cheesy stories are good and the wrestling is actually good. It's so refreshing after the awkward "sports entertainment" scene you get from WWE. They have a weekly show called Dynamite that's two hours long that airs on cable (I think it's on TNT, I forget -- I just stream it from some illicit websites because I will never pay for cable lmao) and then a one-hour weekly show that airs on YouTube called Dark, which consists of the fights from the Dynamite event that aren't aired as part of that program.
A lot of the wrestlers in the promotion are famous from the indie scene (btw in the rassl world, everyone spells indie as "indy" and I hate it) but I have no idea who they are because I barely even know WWE wrestlers as I'm pretty new to this whole thing. But I'm learning them and really like everyone so far.
Crushes:
Peter Avalon (The Librarian)
Riho
Christopher Daniels of SCU
Jimmy Havoc
This is the newest thing I've gotten into. It's 80's-themed and they use like scanlines and color diffusion and stuff in their logo and stuff like that. Because it's supposed to be 'old-school' it's more just strictly wrestling; there's not all these wild characters and entrance theme songs and stuff. I actually thought I wouldn't be into something like that but I'm really loving it. There are few camera angles so you can really see who is good in the ring or not.
Their show Powerrr only has three episodes right now, which is great because I like being into things from the beginning. Actually, AEW is like that, too, with Dynamite only having aired 3 or 4 episodes so far.
The thing is, both AEW and NWA are old and only just now getting into the 'big' scene. I think AEW is a private corporation or whatever now, but NWA is still considered indie?? (I have no idea what constitutes 'indy' and what doesn't -- other than 'Indy' is Indianapolis and not 'indie' :P)
Anyway, I got super attached to the characters and theme really fast, and am looking forward to watching more Powerrr as it airs. I could even see this becoming my favorite promotion if it continues to be this fun.
Crushes:
Colt Cabana
Nick Aldis
Eli Drake
Royce Isaacs of Wild Cards
OK I know like none of these except Eli look like my type but these are all outdated pictures. Colt and Nick have handsome beards and Royce sports a fantastically sexy mustache now.
I don't have a lot to say about this because it's WWE lol. I think everyone knows what it is. They're not allowed to say the word "wrestling" anymore so I don't think WWE even stands for anything anymore, it's just "WWE." Though there's rumor that they're trying to 'change' and turn back into an attitude-era type of thing, but... honestly with the show still being PG and McMahon at the head I can't see it happening.
The roster is huge, with five major shows that air every week (RAW, SmackDown, NXT, NXT UK, and 205Live). If you've read (who is actually reading this?!) my other rasslin posts you'll know 205Live is my favorite. Anyway, huge roster means tons of crushes to choose from. So, uh, here's a big list.
Crushes:
Gran Metalik
Drew Gulak
Tony Nese
(Mustafa) Ali
The Brian Kendrick
Gentleman Jack Gallagher
Roman Reigns
Aiden English
Carmella
Charlotte Flair
Trent Seven
Bianca Belair
There are probably many more and I'm just gonna stop here.
Oh, and the 90s guy who got me into this whole wrestling thing to begin with: Irwin R. Schyster
iMPACT, honestly, is kinda dumb. But I'm intrigued by it at least. The stories are so ridiculous and trying so hard to be edgy. And the characters all feel about the same to me (gruff yells-a-lot guys). I've only watched a couple episodes because I'm not going back and catching up or anything, just kinda started watching from a couple weeks ago.
I'm interesting in following it, though, just because of how ridiculous it all is. Plus there's a sleazy mustache guy who throws people with his dick (I'm not kidding). And that makes up my entire crush list for iMPACT actually, as no one has really stood out to me so far.
Crush: Joey Ryan
Other than those, I'm wanting to get into some other stuff like NJPW, but I don't really know where to start with that. And I kinda want to check out ROH but... same predicament. I don't think ROH has a weekly show or anything like that, and then NJPW seems... sporadic and more airs like tournaments or something? I don't know. And just other indies stuff I wanna try getting into, too, but it's harder to really access this stuff since it's not televised, so I'm not sure where to start. There's an indy wrestling twitch channel that just shows stuff all day, but there's no context and I don't know what anything is.
Also something I'm really learning about wrestling is how real it is (I knowwwww that sounds really stupid but) ... Like, so much of wrestling is just getting hurt on purpose, rather than pretending to be hurt. I mean they intentionally do mostly things that shouldn't cause severe injury (even though injuries end up being common) or kill someone, but a lot of stuff they do really hurts, and their job is to just take the pain. Things where they get cut up by glass, barbed wire, whatever, is really happening, which I was surprised to learn. Basically if someone is bleeding, it's because they intentionally cut themselves up for show. There's no fake blood. Which I think is wild. And especially for indy stuff, some of these people do stuff that honestly is near killing themselves just for the reactions.
Basically, despite being staged and choreographed, they're still just actually hurting each other for show. Which is wild. And from watching lots of BTS stuff and interviews, I'm starting to learn just how much they really go through.
The age of trying to pretend it's actually real is long over, so you hear candid accounts of what's actually happening. A surprising thing to me recently is Joey Janela was talking about how he got his head stapled with a staple gun during a match like... they easily could have just not loaded the stapler since it's not like anyone is close enough to notice a detail like if a staple came out or not, but they still just legit stapled his head. And that's one of the lighter things he talked about. I'm honestly surprised he's alive hahaha.
But yeah, it makes me appreciate (and fear) the industry a lot more. I tried explaining this to Dennis but he was just like "you know it's fake, right?" and I'm just like UGH YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT I'M SAYING hahahaha.
I want to like force my friends to like the rassl so I can fangirl over it with them but alas it is not to be. I am constantly shoving it down Nans's throat though hahaha. I kinda feel bad for her.
Just kinda.
But yeah that's my wrestling rambling for today. The main reason I wrote all this is because I don't have anything to watch right now since the Monday stuff hasn't started yet (and I watch most of that on Tuesday anyway) and I wanted to make a list of crushes lmfao.
