Oct. 23rd, 2016 12:58 amWas about to go play unsaga... and my disc image is gone. I was deleted a bunch of stuff recently and I deleted my Innocent Life directory. I forgot that I was just using it as a general disc image dir and never bothered to rename it. So I lost my PS2 isos lol. Instead of waiting til I can get to my physical copies on Monday, I'mma just download a copy. I've used this download before and it worked fine, so I should be good.
I've been thinking a ton about the future of computing and I want to type it all here but it's so much and so complicated and just no lol. But basically I'm speculating a ton about the future of the software economy.
Eventually, computing will work a bit different than it does now. Basically, there will be a cloud of supercomputers far beyond the capability of 'regular' computers, and we'll connect to them with our 'regular' computers -- but everything will be done server-side, except for very basic things. Basically the cloud network will be the 'mainframe' and our personal devices will be the 'terminals.'
But what about software access? It won't exactly be distribution but... with the path we're taking now, the future will be tons of unaffordable subscription services and pay-per-access stuff. Maybe evolve into 'portal' subscriptions with packages you can add on? So buying a network connection will be like buying a cable package.
But at the same time, the core of computing and networking today is dominated by free software, and the free software community, and really hopefully anyone in their right mind, will not stand for all of the world's information, software, data, and media to become privately owned and controlled by an oligopoly.
So maybe we'll see a huge uprising from the free software community, and free software ethics and culture will rule the computing world in the future. And since computing and entertainment media will be so closely related...
It's just a lot to think about, and so many ways it could go. But either way, the very structure of computing is going to change. And it will be different enough from how it is now that it's hard to predict how it will all really work, especially when it comes to the economical structure.
I feel like Microsoft is really preparing for this -- all the steps they've been taking recently seem to be preparing for this new kind of model. Windows is becoming more like what I'd imagine one of those "portal" services to be like. Except for now at least, we still keep our software on our personal storage media and still do most of our processing client-side. But their distribution/sales model seems to be something that makes a lot of sense for a cloud computing ecosystem. They'll have a huge lead on the model when everyone else is scrambling to adapt. It may be a pain now, but it's the future. I honestly think Microsoft is doing a lot of development based on what will be rather than what is now, which is why all their current products seem so out-of-touch. They're not built for today, but rather in preparation for tomorrow. I have a feeling they're going to dominate the computer world harder than ever before once this new structure falls into place.
Anyway, I have a lot more random thoughts but it's kinda pointless to even think about any of this, and I'm tired and gonna sleep now. I need to post about some bday stuff later XD
