Anything has to be better than last episode, right?? Well today's episode starts with... yet again not knowing how to read a map and being confused :,) C'mon, can't you guys learn? Anyway, they can't disagree on a direction, but somehow stumble upon a traditional Japanese house out in the middle of the mountain forest.

They enter and call out, but nobody seems to answer. Kasumi leans on the nearby wall, and it flips around and she gets trapped on the other side of it. The little one second of her going "Kya!" and falling through the wall is so funny that I rewatched it like 4 times and laughed. I don't know why, but I couldn't get over it XD
Anyway, Takeshi realizes it's a trick wall and they find Kasumi on the other side.

In this next room, they run into a Kongpang! This cute little fuzzy bug starts running around, and of course, when a Pokemon runs in this show, you gotta chase it! The gang runs around after it but keeps running into traps like invisible walls and Biriridama in the floors. There's a little "gag" where they think Satoshi dies by falling into the river out the side of the house, but he's really hanging on the edge of a cliff.

Upon entering another room, Satoshi is assaulted by a bunch of shuriken, pinning him to the wall. The others come in to find a ninja named Aya challenging the group to a Pokemon battle, saying they can't leave otherwise. Kasumi points out that her hot pink outfit isn't really proper for a ninja who hides in the shadows lol. And of course there's the whole Takeshi swooning thing.

Satoshi agrees to battle Kongpang, and sends out Fushigidane. Kongpang uses a spore attack, and Fushigidane blows it away with his strange ability to blow air really hard (this has happened a couple times now?!) and then... something happens and the area is covered in smoke. My video was corrupted and I missed several seconds of the battle. :(

Enter, Kyou! Aya's older brother.
Turns out this guy is the Sekichiku gym leader, and we're actually in the gym. That's... convenient! Just where we were trying to go! But uh... where is the rest of Sekichiku City...? XD
Kyou is very handsome, but he doesn't come across so much in the anime. I really like his game design, but something about his anime look is just... off. His face seems very pointy and thin or something? He looks maybe a little malnourished lol.

Satoshi challenges Kyou to a battle for the Pink Badge, and he accepts, sending out his own Kongpang. Satoshi is excited because he just defeated a Kongpang, so it should be easy! But Kyou states that his Kongpang has much more experience. Then it just immediately evolves into Morphon lol. No battle or reason or anything, just evolves.
Morphon is a really cool Pokemon. I got really attached to mine in my Heart Gold bugs-only run. There's a theory (at least, I don't think it was ever confirmed) that Morphon was supposed to be the evolution of Caterpie/Transel, and that Butterfree was going to be the evolution of Kongpang. When you look at Kongpang, it has the same face as Butterfree, so it makes sense. But I guess they thought Butterfree would be a better 'early game' Pokemon and swapped the two Pokemon around.
Anyway, lots of cool poison type Pokemon in this episode, with Morphon being my favorite, as it's a poison AND a bug :D Kongpang is OK... of all bug Pokemon, it's not one of my favorites. I don't dislike it or anything, it's just... a fuzzball and doesn't really look 'buggy' enough to me lol. Still cool though.
Satoshi sends out Pigeon who immediately gets hit with spores and falls over, incapacitated. Like, it got to do nothing at all. It tried to blow the spores away but couldn't. That was its entire battle. And it's been a while since we saw Pigeon, too... oh well. Poor thing.
Next, Satoshi sends out Hitokage, which is arguably his strongest Pokemon and has gotten in some of the best battle experience. Besides Pikachu, I mean, who is the strongest because he's the mascot :P

But before the battle can conclude, Rocket Co. crashes in dressed as kabuki actors. How did they explain this in the English version? I can't remember. But I don't think most kids know what kabuki is outside of Japan lol. Anyway, everyone starts sending Pokemon out -- Aya calls out Kongpang to help Hitokage and Morphon, but Musashi throws spider silk at them that completely immobilizes them. Just like that!
Pikachu suffers the same fate. Since Satoshi seems so helpless, Kasumi steps in and tries to call Starmie, but Koduck appears instead. She then tries to summon Hitodeman, but Koduck gets in the way. She decides to just let Koduck have its way and fight.
First it wags its tail and gets shy about it. Then it tries to scratch Arbok but gets its head bitten instead. Kasumi starts to rage at how useless the poor thing is. But after scrambling around for a bit, it starts to let out its psychic powers, and even blasts the Rockets out of the building! Kyou and Aya offer to trade their Pokemon to her, but she's now all like "Koduck is my precious baby~" even though she was trying to trade it away to Takeshi earlier in the episode.
Then Satoshi remembers that they need to battle for the Pink Badge when Kyou brings it up.

This time they battle outside instead of in the building. Why? It's a mystery to everyone.
Kyou uses Golbat this time, and Satoshi continues with Hitokage. The match is pretty one-sided, with Hitokage countering all of Golbat's attacks with his own, and eventually burning it up in a whirlwind of fire.
Golbat is a cool Pokemon. It's not that great in gen 1 though I still like it, and it eventually gets some time to shine as being the precursor to the much more powerful Crobat. But yeah, a cool poison type bat, and it looks funny (its Blue sprite with its giant flailing tongue will always be my favorite memory for its appearance) in a cute way. I don't know if Takeshi's Zubat ever evolves but that would be cool if he got to use Golbat for a while. Now that I think of it, I kinda feel like there is Crobat in the anime at some point on the ggg's team, so maybe it is his...? Or maybe Satoshi gets one, idk. Or maybe I'm just completely confabulating.

So Satoshi wins fairly his next badge (huzzah!) and we're at six badges now. Two more to go and there's still like 50 episodes left in this arc. I wouldn't be surprised if we get the next badge soon enough, but then there will probably be some time before the final one, and then a bunch of hubbub with the league...? I don't know. I feel like the story is moving very fast at this point and it's going to come to a crawl soon. Maybe it doesn't, though? Who knows! I never even got to the end of the Kanto league as a teen I think. All I know is there's going to be a really stupid 'wild boy' jungle episode and probably sometime soon lmao.
And now I go to bed ^_^ Thanks for reading this far~~~
ETA: Forgot to 'review' the episode, but just wanted to say it was pretty fun, a very good one overall. Nice battles, some funny Rocket stuff, #JusticeForKoduck, and lots of pretty purple poison Pokemon.

Date: 2024-08-20 05:24 pm (UTC)Kyou is kinda handsome. Maybe he’s underfed because they live in the middle of the forest and don’t readily have access to food lol.
I vaguely remember the Rockets popping in dressed Kabuki style as a kid. They probably didn’t explain it and just went with the generic Japanese themeing of the ep, what with the ninjas and all that.

Date: 2024-08-21 12:24 am (UTC)Kyou is handsome. They did this thing in the first generation where they just made all the gym leaders incredibly good-looking without making them conventionally "hot" characters??????????
