Puyo Champs
May. 5th, 2019 11:15 amSo, Puyo Puyo Champions is coming out in a couple days (!!!) and I'm super hyped about it. This game is purely a VS-Mode game, with no single player campaign or anything like that, so the characters in the game are purely for aesthetic. They all come from previous games though and this game has a pretty cool set, even though I was initially disappointed with it for missing some of my all-time favs (like Oshare Bones :( :( )
I'm gonna go through my favs (which is like, half of the entire roster XD) and explain why I like them (or rather, in my usual style, just explain dryly who they are and expect you to understand that that's why I like them).
These are just in alphabetical order because of the way I saved the images XD It's not like a ranking list or anything.

ALEX
Alex is a new character from Puyo Quest (a mobile gacha game that's been around for over 6 years in Japan and will, depressingly, probably never see a western release) and this is her first time being in a main/normal Puyo Pop game.
In the original Quest game, she starts out as a normal knight-type character and as you power her up you learn she was secretly a princess who became a knight, and she stays knightly but gets different hair and a princess crown and cooler armor.
I'm a sucker for the paladin-like design, and her name is Alex hahah.

AMITIE
Amitie is the lead character from Puyo Pop Fever and basically the main character that Sega created for the series. I just like the main characters and she's super cute. Her catchphrases from the original Puyo Pop Fever were so adorable ("Get really real!") and I love her giant Puyo hat.

ARLE
The original main character of Puyo back when it was owned by Compile. Being the original main character is just cool on its own, I guess, and she has lots of cute phrases in Japanese. The English counterpart is a little weird but still cute. We don't get "batankyuu" in English sadly hahaha.

CARBUNCLE
Arle's little buddy and the obligatory cute mascot for the series. As if the Puyos themselves were not already cute mascots. This guy was originally Satan's pet or something but then started following Arle around. He's cute and funny and only says "gu" and loves to eat curry.

CIEL
Ciel is another character that debuted in Puyo Quest and is getting her first appearance in a normal Puyo game here. She's like, an angel accountant and says stuff like "BUT MY CALCULATIONS" and says random French things that I don't understand and has glasses.

LAGNUS
Lagnus is another paladin-like character with the gold armors that I like. But being a typical young-looking guy you would think I wouldn't like him. However, his gimmick is so cute. He has a curse on him that makes him into a 10-year-old, even though he's normally like 17 or something. As he uses magic (getting puyo chains) he is able to turn back into a normal teenager, but the effect is only temporary, as he goes back to being 10 again once the chain is done.
It's a stupid and cute little gimmick, and I love that basically his magic is puberty magic hahaha.

RAFFINA
Raffina is more of a nostalgic favorite, as she's pretty bland in this game it seems. She was the rival of Amitie (well, self-declared rival, it seems, as Amitie seemed to just see her as a friend) in the original Puyo Pop Fever. She had adorable catchphrases like "Well, La~ti~da" and I used to even have an lj icon of that.
Can't imagine using her much in this game, but I still appreciate the old Raffine (when her name used to be spelled like that XD)

RINGO
Ah, Ringo!! Another main character, this time the protagonist of Puyo Puyo 7. She's the most recently created new protag, and her gimmick is that she's a school nerd and her 'spells' are all math-named (sine, cosine, tangent, algorithms, calculus!) which is sooooo cool because I'm a math nerd too, and she is adorable and MATH SPELLS GUYS MATH SPELLS.

SATAN
My first cosplay ever was Satan from Puyo Puyo~n (Puyo Puyo 4). The original Compile-era baddy, he's such a weirdo nerd bad guy. Also his name is Satan. I... don't really have a lot to say about this guy, as it's another nostalgia interest, I guess, ahaha.

SIG
My spirit animal, Sig. He's obsessed with bugs and talks like he doesn't care about anything (monotone voice). His new English voice is super weird but adorable in its own way. His spells are sadly/strangely not bug-related, but rather names of stones (cobalt, lapis lazuli, etc.). Which is weird but kind of cool because he's stone guy AND bug guy now?

SUKETOUDARA
A Compile-era fav that has somehow stuck around for a while and keeps showing up. I guess for good reason because he's hilarious. He's a DISCO FISH. He thinks he's all that and says stuff like "Try not to fall in love~" when he wins. He's just so funny and adorable.
And that's all the ones I wanted to share :) I love this cast and am so looking forward to playing around with everyone in the game and hearing all the funny voice clips. I'm also hoping we get dual-audio options so I can try out both English and Japanese voices, though I'll probably mostly play in English anyway. Some people got early access to the game but I haven't seen if there's a dual-audio option yet. Probably somewhere deep in those streams someone has looked for it and shown if it exists or not, but I haven't seen it personally.
