Final Fantasy VI - part 2

So I'm not going to write about everything that happens in the game like a normal play diary, I think. I'm just going to write when I feel like I have something I want to comment on. So this is just going to be a random collection of thoughts about FF6.
Oh, I want to note about the opening to the game. The like... lightning and firey text. Super weird. It definitely has an 'epic' feel to it, though, and sets up the dark theme of the game. But it also just... feels weird hahaha. Like almost unfitting...? I don't remember any thunderstorms or anything in the game? It just feels like they chose a random "dark and scary" atmosphere idea and threw it together.
Edgar is listed as an "imperial ally" as well as the champion of the technological revolution. I do have to say I like the setting -- a post-war world where magic was lost and technology sprang up in its place. Very cool setting.
Terra's "Some girls would have felt something from those words..." is so melodramatic. No one would feel anything from Edgar's hopeless flirting lmao.
Talking to the people in the sleeping quarters (I think I usually just say "no" and don't go in and talk to them lol, but you HAVE to sleep to talk to them) we learn that Edgar hits on anything with a vagina, and that he even tried to hit on the high priestess. I do appreciate the little lines of lore like this.
Though apparently he also hit on a little girl in the castle :,)
The Figaro dungeon is full to capacity. I guess Edgar likes throwing people in jail? I like paying attention to how many prisoners a dungeon has in games, to see how strict the rulers are. Edgar seems very strict! I mean, this place is out in the desert, how many criminals can there even be all the way out here? I guess they could come from South Figaro. One of the dudes even seems to be respectful of Edgar, saying he'll let them out when he finds the REAL bad guys or something. lol??????????? So he's just locking them up for funsies while he tries to find worse criminals? And they're cool with that? Very strange lol.
Kefka's music is very fun. The pizzicato strings mixed with the oboe is so light and playful. When the heavy bass brass comes in it gets really comical, too. I guess it's fitting for someone who looks like a clown and is dubbed "foolish" by the game's own script. Kefka is like... kinda comic relief? Maybe that's part of why I don't like him hahaha. He comes off more as a joke than ~cRaZy eViL~
Edgar tells the guard at the southern cave to return to the castle and pass the word along...? How does he get into the castle when it's buried in the sand? Couldn't Kefka also get in then?
Love the turtle in the recovery spring lol. I also love the cave music. I wish they had used an actual choir for the voices here, though. The synth choir is cool but it would be cool hearing ladies going "hah hoo hah" hahaha.
Stealing is satisfying in this game. I think almost every enemy has something to steal and the steal rate is not abysmal (though it's not great, but that's normal). I think this might be the 3rd most satisfying stealing game (with FF9 in first and FF12 in second) in the series. Which I nice because I love stealing.
Noticed Belmodar holds Mythril Claws from the bestiary... decided to try stealing from one. First one, firsty try... Mythril Claws. Oh yeah ;)
Relics are cool, they're pretty much the best accessory system of the Pixel Remaster era. With Relics and Steal, maybe the gameplay isn't as bad as I remember XD Though I remember it getting much more boring later when you get Magicite system.
Edgar's tools can be used from the back row easily, and Terra doesn't really benefit much from the front row, either, but that leaves Locke in the front all by himself if you try to optimize the other two, which is not good XD
lol an old man just APPEARS outside Sabin's cabin to tell you what happened, then runs off into the wilderness...???? LOL
I wonder if Cider Guy drinks "cider" in the JP version...?
Is it possible to just... not meet Shadow at this point...? He seems super random at this part anyway. I remember when I was a kid I named him "BATMAN" lol.
OK JK Terra is like my main plain attacker lol. Locke just steals every turn and Terra doesn't have enough MP to be running magic that frequently, so we'll just have her attack :D I even gave her the Hyper Wrist, Gigas Glove, and a Great Sword.
That's one thing I do like about this game, is that each character has a variety of weapons they're trained in. Some not as many, but it makes sense that Terra and Edgar would know how to use larger swords, due to their military backgrounds, but Locke can only use knives and smaller swords. Later he gets his own weapons that he's good at too, like the chakram-y thing.
OK maybe FF6 gameplay is not that bad XD I keep praising it.
Vargas kicks everyone to the ground, and they're just like "Oh hi who are you?" lol
I use the Blitz commands on Vargas multiple times and then only after the Blitz tutorial does Vargas recognize I'm using Blitz lmfao
Sabin gets the Hyper Wrist and Gigas Glove, sorry Terra. Also we got that nice Mythril Claw for him right away too ;)
OK I ended up saving outside the cave and watching my friend stream Revenge of the Seven and then did some food prep for tomorrow, so that's as far as I got tonight. Oops :) Will try to play more tomorrow.

Date: 2024-11-20 07:20 pm (UTC)There’s Zozo. It’s raining their perpetually.
So he's just locking them up for funsies while he tries to find worse criminals
I thought it was implied that Edgar’s prisoners are either petty thieves from South Figaro, and primarily enemies of the Empire. The “worse criminals” Edgar means is the Empire itself (Kefka, Geshthal, etc). At least, that’s how I read it. Everything in Figaro is supposed to give the illusion that the kingdom, and Edgar, are totally on the empire’s side.
Kefka is like... kinda comic relief? Maybe that's part of why I don't like him hahaha. He comes off more as a joke than ~cRaZy eViL~
I promise I won’t be one of those “KEFKA IS ELITE” fanboys, but I will say that the reason you don’t like him is what works for me. I like that he’s this ridiculous joke character who, if you know nothing about the game or series at all, really seems like an arc villain or recurring pest, like Zorn and Thorn in FF9. Then the pulls the rug out from under the player by killing named characters and becoming a god. Watch who you mocked in high school, girls.
Which I nice because I love stealing.
Me too : )
Though I remember it getting much more boring later when you get Magicite system.
I like the Magicite for building everyone in weird, fun ways. Like, I almost always build Locke as a healer/support type.
if you try to optimize the other two, which is not good XD
Fortunately, Edgar’s tools basically shred everything for a good while.
lol an old man just APPEARS outside Sabin's cabin to tell you what happened, then runs off into the wilderness...???? LOL
I’ll agree this is just sloppy. This is something early FF games often did, dropping some rando for messy expositing to the player. Uncouth!
Later he gets his own weapons that he's good at too, like the chakram-y thing.
I love Locke’s chakram/boomerangs!
Looking forward to more FF6 posts!

Date: 2024-11-21 01:38 am (UTC)It's the prisoner that's like "we're just petty criminals, the worse ones will be jailed later!" like they're just cool with being jailed lol. But it makes more sense that he's playing to the empire like you say.
Yeah I was actually talking about the Magicite system with a friend last night after writing these and I feel like it's actually pretty cool because of the way it lets you "build" your characters. I think that when I played it before the first couple times, I obsessively tried to get all magic on all characters instead of using the magicite for their stat boosts and stuff like that, which kinda ruined it for me and left a bad taste in my mouth. So that was more my problem than the game's XD But I kinda remember last time focusing on building/customizing characters with them and enjoying it a lot more.
Yeah, tools are OP for a while. Even with all the stat-boosting stuff on Terra, it didn't even matter if she was physically attacking or not :\ Still took 1 or 2 rounds of tools to off everything. It's nice in that you can just destroy everything, and I guess they don't give you too much you're "missing out" on using besides Terra's magic. Locke can still steal, and then Blitz is good once you get access to that.
The boomerang thingies are so cool :D And I always love a good back-row weapon B)
